After losing their beloved hound dog Cedar, my cousins Tay and Em were inspired to start fostering. In their first year, they fostered nearly 100 dogs, including many pregnant mamas. With your help, we were honored to help fulfill their wish list items, such as food and potty pads, enabling them to continue their amazing work! On a side note, Tay and Em are also talented wedding and lifestyle photographers who generously donate their time to photograph rescue pets, aiding in their journey to find forever homes. Check out their IG profile for some heartwarming puppy photos! @fosterandphoto
Our local Alpine Animal Shelter relies on community donations for its dog enrichment program. Treats play a crucial role, allowing volunteers to use positive rewards for socialization and basic training during yard playtime. Plus, the shelter staff ensures that every dog gets a peanut butter-stuffed Kong at the end of the day! Thanks to your generosity, we were able to donate a significant supply of treats to keep their pantry stocked!
Larryssa single-handedly runs the Lordsburg Animal Shelter and does an outstanding job of rescuing, caring for, and re-homing unwanted pups in a tiny, underfunded, no-kill shelter. We had the pleasure of meeting her in January of this year and were thrilled to support her spay/neuter program. Thanks to the proceeds from our pattern sales, we are able to make meaningful contributions to causes like this!
Animal overpopulation in Texas is a serious issue, leading to overcrowded shelters and high euthanasia rates. Thousands of healthy, adoptable pets are euthanized each year simply due to lack of space and resources. Spay and neuter programs are vital in addressing this crisis, as they help reduce the number of unwanted litters and prevent the cycle of overpopulation. By supporting these programs, we can save lives and improve the welfare of animals across the state. Since Cactus Flower Crochet officially started in September 2023, thanks to your support, we've been able to make significant contributions to help spay and neuter shelter pets in our local West Texas communities!
This local West Texas rescue excels at getting the community involved. They host meet and greets at coffee shops, pet stores, farmers' markets, and more. Plus, they organize a weekly "hike with dogs" at Davis Mountain State Park to help socialize the dogs—a fantastic program! Their kennel facility is impressive, featuring the innovative Sweet Suite shelter system. They even have a covered porch and a short trail out front, allowing you to spend quality time with a dog and take it for a walk. They do incredible work, and we hope to add them to our donation list in 2025. Read more about their innovative shelter system here!
The Underground Dog, based in Marfa, TX, has partnered with One Tail at a Time Collective to become One Tail at a Time-West Texas (OTAT-WTX). This foster-based, all-breed, no-kill rescue supports many small towns and shelterless communities across nine counties in West Texas. Being part of the OTAT Collective has allowed them to expand their reach and increase their impact in Far West Texas. Click this link to read about the vital work they do in the borderlands! (Scroll to the bottom of the page to see their impressive 2023 impact report.) We are hopeful that fostering for this amazing group is in our near future!
Our local humane society steps in where small communities face funding issues. They run a thrift store and cattery, coordinate pop-up spay/neuter clinics with nearby towns, and provide medical assistance to families struggling to afford their pets' vet care. They even donated more than $80,000 to the City of Alpine for the construction of a crematorium at the Alpine Animal Services shelter. Find out more here, or check to see if your town has a local humane society and learn about the work they are doing.
*We support local humane societies, which are independent organizations and not affiliated with the HSUS (Humane Society of the U.S.)..)
The issue of unwanted street dogs in Mexico is close to my heart. I moved to Baja California, Mexico, when I was 19 and lived there for 8 years. During that time, I rescued and adopted my best friend, Canelo, two years before returning to the U.S. I cannot imagine my life without knowing and loving him.
Without effective spay/neuter programs, the unwanted dog population inevitably grows out of control and many throughout Mexico lack access or funds for proper Veterinary care.Thankfully, several organizations in Baja are working to change this, and Baja Street Dogs is one of them.
Baja Street Dogs, based in Todos Santos, Baja California Sur, Mexico, is primarily run by Mark Newton, formerly of Los Angeles. While they place the majority of their rescues in California, they also make a significant impact locally. They host spay/neuter clinics, provide vaccines and necessary surgeries, and offer education and assistance for ongoing animal care. We hope to add them to our support list in the future, helping them continue their rescue and rehabilitation efforts and contributing to their long-term goal of creating a dog sanctuary where old and unwanted animals can live out their lives in comfort with proper love and care.

Longhopes Donkey Shelter is the gold standard for what a rescue should be. Their transparency with financials, treatment of donors and sponsors, and overall operations are exemplary. We have been privately supporting Longhopes since 2008, when we discovered them while living in Colorado for a short time. We love donkeys as much as we love pups and kitties, so after visiting the rescue and witnessing their work, it was an easy decision to support them. Our first donation was just $25, but our commitment to them has never wavered.
If you're interested, click this link to check out their amazing work or visit their Instagram, which always brings a smile to our faces! Although this has been a personal family charitable project, I hope to increase our giving and become a corporate sponsor as well. Hay and vet bills for large animals are no joke!
